Its fate has mirrored that of its home city, ever since Lorenz Adlon first convinced Kaiser Wilhelm II that the German capital deserved a grand luxury hotel on par with those in London and Paris. There are two rooms for guests with disabilities and six rooms with hypoallergenic pillows and fabrics to accommodate guests with allergies.The hotel offers family rooms and makes children feel welcome with a range of nifty touches, from allowing them to check in their families at the front desk and getting their own themed key cards, to age-appropriate treats in the rooms (lollipops and gummi bears) and children’s bathrobes, soaps and bubble baths.
We also attended the Dortmund/Frankfurt Pokal Cup Soccer game which the hotel celebrated with a beautiful floral arrangement in both of the team's colors in the entrance. Designed by London’s Ezra Attia Associates and Sweden’s AB Living Designs, the rooms and suites vary in terms of price and indulgence levels, though all come with limestone floors, mahogany and cherry furnishings and black granite bathrooms with bathtubs. Overlooking the Brandenburg Gate, the hotel's prestigious location is matched to top-notch facilities (a two-floor spa, several restaurants) and flawless service.The Brandenburg Gate is right outside the front door, as is the historic Academy of Arts, Max Liebermann’s former home, and several embassies. You’ll have to pay premium rates for a suite overlooking the Pariser Platz, but on the other hand, those facing the inner courtyard are nice and quiet.Of the hotel’s three restaurants, the two Michelin-starred Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer, helmed by Hendrik Otto, is the most esteemed, offering a constantly changing menu of refined European dishes. Luxury-minded guests praise the breakfast. Afternoon tea costs €42 (£37) and now comes with champagne for an extra charge and breakfast, while the Bel Etage breakfast buffet – while also not cheap at €45 (£39) per person – does include pretty much every item you can imagine (endless mueslis, breads, eggs, bacon, pastries), including a separate table of Asian dishes and treats like champagne, waffles, eggs benedict and caviar.
So many of the attractions are within walking distance like the Reichstag Building, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and Museum Island to name a few. Everything was literally taking place all around the hotel.

That said, the swish lobby area, comprehensively refurbished in 2017 for a cool €6 million, has a slightly more modern feel thanks to new furnishings (velvet sofas and bergère armchairs) and a new lighting concept; the 1.5 metre Murano chandelier and famous elephant fountain keeps it reassuringly classic though.As well as a (circular, after the refurbishment) reception area, the lobby features a dedicated concierge desk and another counter for the hotel’s “Ladies in Red” – Kempinski’s brand ambassadors.
